Overview
Statistical MethodologyAgricultural sector is considered one of the important sectors in the State, which has a great contribution in the national income and due to importance of Price index as an economic indicator that summarizes development of various phenomena and variables over time that helps research and study. CAPMAS took care of preparing and issuing the current series of Price index representing the agricultural sector on (2007/2008) basis.
-CAPMAS issued several series of index depicting agricultural sector activity
1- A series covers (1948 – 1963) based on average agricultural years (1935-1939).
2- A series covers (1965 – 1976) based on average fiscal years (62\63-64\65).
3- A series covers (1977 – 1987) based on average agricultural years (1974-1976).
4- A series covers (1988 – 1998) based on average agricultural years (1986-1987).
5- A series covers (1998 – 2010) based on average agricultural years (1997-1998).
6- A series covers ( 2008 – 2016) based on average agricultural years (2007-2008).
First-Preparing index target:
1-Get an indicator to measure change in agricultural production volume, feddans productivity and added value whether at current or constant prices
2-Measuring change in quantity of agricultural production requirements at successive periods of time attributed to a fixed base period for use in all purposes whether economic or planning
3-Measuring change in contribution of agricultural sector to national income.
Farm prices for agricultural production and its requirements in the base year were used as weights when calculating the agricultural production indices, due to the lack of data on added value of each of the production items. Quantity of agricultural production and its requirements ** in the comparison year were also used as a weighting basis when calculating the price indices received by farmers.
Second-Used definitions and concepts :
1-Agricultural production:
It is the production of agricultural tenure from plant &animal crops, fishing production, hunting in its marketing form without any industrial operations with the aim of increasing its added value and obtaining income from this process.
2-Base period:
The two agricultural years average * (2007, 2008) is taken as a unified basis in all indices.
3-Used method in weighting:
Farm prices for agricultural production and its requirements in the base year were used as weights when calculating agricultural production indices, due to the lack of data on the added value of each of the production items. The quantity of agricultural production and its requirements ** in the comparison year were also used as a weighting basis when calculating the price indices received by farmers
Third - Statistical Content:
It includes five main sectors:
Chapter One: includes agricultural production Index series development upon total level.
Chapter Two: includes agricultural production Index at the detailed level, where is divided into:
1- Total quantity of agricultural production index .
2- Total amount of food production index .
3- Total quantity of agricultural production index devoid of intermediate agricultural commodities.
4- Quantity of agricultural production requirements index .
The following is a presentation of the components of each of them separately:
1- The index number for total quantity of agricultural production and consists of
A- Plant Production Department, which includes:
(1) Field crops, which include:
(A) Fiber group:Includes cast cotton, straw flax and fibers.
(B) Grain group:Includes wheat,rice,barley,maize and sorghum.
(C) Legumes group:Includes beans,lentils,fenugreek,chickpeas and lupine.
(D) Oilseeds group:Includes peanuts,sesame,sunflower,flaxseed and soybeans.
(E) Sugar crops group:Includes sugar cane,sugar beet.
(F) Onion and black seed group:Includes onion, whole green onion and black seed
(G) Woods and straws group:Includes cotton firewood,maize firewood,sorghum firewood,linen firewood,sunflower firewood,soybean firewood,peanuts firewood,sesame firewood and rice straw.
(H) Fodder and Hay group:Includes clover,Hays and other green feeds.
(2) Vegetables and grains: Include all varieties of vegetables and grains.
(3) Citrus,fruits and palms:Include Citrus,fruits,palms and their products
4) Medicinal, aromatic crops and ornamental plants:Include medicinal crops, aromatic crops andornamental plants.
B-Animal Production Department, which includes the following groups:
(1) Animal production group:Include cattle meat,poultry meat,eggs,dairy,fertilizer,wool,hair and lint.
(2) Insect Production group:Include bee honey and wax.
(3) Fish and Sea fishing group:Include fish and crustaceans.
2-Total amount of food production Index:
It consists of some groups and items of the agricultural production index that are suitable as food which are:
Cereals - Legumes - Oilseeds - Sugar crops - Vegetables and grains - Citrus fruits and Palm trees - Cattle meat - Poultry meat - Eggs - Dairy - Honey - Fish and Crustaceans).
3-Total quantity of agricultural production index devoid of intermediate agricultural commodities:
The number covers the same sections, groups and items that make up Total quantity of agricultural production index after excluding intermediate agricultural commodities (seeds of crops, vegetables, fruits, organic and chemical fertilizers, dry unprocessed fodder, green fodder and hatching factor eggs) from total agricultural production in order to eliminate duplication resulting from considering some productive agricultural commodities and at the same time requiring
an attempt to hide interference between the sector itself.
4-Quantity of agricultural production requirements index:
The index for quantity of agricultural production requirements includes two main parts:
A-Requirements for agricultural production that divided into:
(1) Chemical pesticides group:includes insecticides,fungicides and herbicides,
(2) Fuels, oils, greases and maintenance group:includes fuel, oils and maintenance expenses
B- Intermediate agricultural commodities which are divided into:
(1) Seeds group:
(A) Crops seedlings include field crops seedlings.
(B) Vegetable seedlings include all vegetables
(C) Medicinal and aromatic grains seedlings
(D) Fruit seedlings includes fruit seedlings whether domestic or imported.
(2) Fertilizer group:
(A) Chemical fertilizers (nitrogenous and ammonia fertilizers, phosphate fertilizers and potassium fertilizers).
(B) Organic fertilizers (synthetic organic fertilizers and natural organic fertilizers.
(3) Feed group:
(A) Dry feed (cereals, processed feed, straws and hay)
(B) Green fodder (Clover and other green fodder)
(4) Egg hatching Labs group:
Chapter Three:Total added value at constant and current prices Index:
Number components:
1- Total value of agricultural production, which is represented in (agricultural products of winter, summer, and indigo crops) vegetables and fruits - chopped wood nurseries and trees - ornamental plants - medicinal crops - dairy products - livestock meat - poultry meat - eggs - fish and crustaceans - other animal products.
2- Total value of agricultural production requirements, which include seeds for field crops, vegetables, fruits, grains, medicinal and aromatic plants, each separately, then fertilizers, pesticides, fodder, oils and fats, depreciation and maintenance.
Chapter Four:Average productivity per feddan Index:
Number (30) includes agricultural production items which are:
wheat,barley,maize,sorghum,yellow corn,rice,dry beans,lentils,lupine, chickpeas,fenugreek,green beans,cotton blossom,straw linen,fiber, peanuts,sesame,flaxseed,sunflower,Soy beans,sugar cane,beets sugar , onions, Clover seeds, winter vegetables, summer vegetables, indigo vegetables, citrus fruits, fruits, aromatic plants.
The number is prepared using the geometric mean of the weighted levels.
Chapter Five:
Agricultural Prices received by farmer index:
The number includes the same departments, groups and items that make up total quantity of agricultural production index.
Fourth-Data Sources:
It was relied on the statement of Ministry of Agriculture with the help of Agricultural Income Bulletin which was issued by Economic Affairs Sector in the Ministry,
(1) Agricultural year was considered a Gregorian year that the difference between them are November and December.
(2) Due to lack of available data for quantity included in the composition of agricultural production index requirements.
