The first series of index was issued in 1914 named as living expenses index by taking the fiscal year 1913/1914 as the base year for Cairo only.In January 1940,The second was issued taking the same name by considering 1939 as the base year for Cairo also.As of July 1967 the third was issued named as Consumer Price Index (CPI) by taking the fiscal year 1966/1967 as a base year covering 11 cities and 6 rural areas. AS of July 1988,the fourth series was issued by taking the fiscal year 1986/1987 as the base year covering all Republic governorates. Time series of consumer price indices was coming in sequence until the ninth series which issued from September 2010 taking January 2010 as a base period.

Abstract

Consumer Price Index (CPI) is considered one of the most important statistical & economic indicators and the most closely related to the daily lives of individuals as well as their impact on decisions taken in economic fields.Consumer Price Index (CPI) depicts the change in goods and services price levels in retail markets as an important indicator to measure inflation.It is also one of the necessary tools used to calculate national income at fixed prices,as well as measuring the change in real wage levels which are the actual wages after clearing them from price changes impacts,The first series of index was issued in 1914 named as living expenses index by taking the fiscal year 1913/1914 as the base year for Cairo only.In January 1940,The second was issued taking the same name by considering 1939 as the base year for Cairo also.As of July 1967 the third was issued named as Consumer Price Index (CPI) by taking the fiscal year 1966/1967 as a base year covering 11 cities and 6 rural areas.As of July 1988,the fourth series was issued by taking the fiscal year 1986/1987 as the base year covering all Republic governorates.Time series of consumer price indices was coming in sequence until the ninth series which issued from September 2010 taking January 2010 as a base period.CAPMAS offers the latest series of Consumer Price Index to help in meeting the statistical needs of researchers,planners and decision-makers
